Note-taking help for older children

As children get older, the text gets longer and the story becomes more complex. The plots get longer, the characters have more emotions, and the details become numerous.

For struggling readers, they spend more mental energy on decoding the words. Using all the energy to decode leaves the battery empty for understanding. 🪫

Teaching kids how to annotate text helps with the comprehension of the text. To be clear, I am not talking about just highlighting a few words here and there. Annotations should be thoughtful reflections on the text.

I created a graphic for one of my clients that has been struggling with understanding their chapter book. I start at the paragraph level and then move into the whole page, etc. We write the main idea and a few key details on a sticky note. ✏️
