Another Free Screener? Meet the CUBED-3!

Everyone loves a free tool to add to their clinical toolbox! The CUBED-3 is one of my favorite free screeners because it helps bridge the gap between language and literacy.

As speech-language pathologists, we know that many students who struggle with reading also struggle with language. Difficulties with vocabulary, listening comprehension, narrative language, and following directions can all impact a student's ability to comprehend text and access classroom instruction. The CUBED-3 was designed with this connection in mind.

The CUBED-3 is a free screening tool for students in kindergarten through eighth grade that helps identify children who may be at risk for language and reading difficulties. Rather than focusing solely on reading performance, it examines the underlying language skills that support successful literacy development.

Depending on the grade level, the screener includes measures of:

  • Vocabulary

  • Listening Comprehension

  • Following Directions

  • Narrative Language

  • Reading Comprehension

For school-based SLPs, the CUBED-3 provides an opportunity to participate in early identification efforts within an MTSS framework. The screener can help identify students who may not yet qualify for special education services but are demonstrating weaknesses in the language skills that support academic success. It also gives SLPs meaningful data to support collaboration with teachers, reading specialists, and intervention teams.

If you're looking for a quick, research-based way to screen both language and literacy skills, the CUBED-3 is a great addition to your assessment toolbox. Free resources that recognize the critical relationship between spoken language and reading achievement are hard to beat!

Upgrade your screening toolbox by adding the CUBED-3 Language Screener! Best of all, it's available for FREE. Upgrade your screening toolkit by adding the CUBED-3. Your future language and literacy evaluations may thank you for it!
